Brief History

In June of 1855, a group of Clarke County people met in the home of James Polly and organized the First Christian
Church.
On July 1, 1865, the church members purchased a lot on the west side of the square. The lot and building provided a
home for the membership at a cost of $1500. The Church carried on its service in this location for the next 28 years.
On October 1, 1893, the lot on which the present church stands today was purchased and a much bigger building was
erected.
Early in the morning of February 7,1954 a fired destroyed the church. Subsequently the current sanctuary was erected
and dedicated on November 11th , 1956.
The First Christian Church is part of the denomination of the Disciples of Christ. In the Christian Church (Disciples of
Christ) congregations are connected to each other and to the whole church by a common covenant that continues to
allow for each expression of church life (congregational, regional, and general) to be self-governing. A part of our heritage
of faith stems from what is known as the Restoration Movement and the Cane Ridge, Kentucky revivals that took place in
the early 1800s.
